Arial photography with Helium Balloon

Besides photographer Frank is also a selfmade inventor. This passion started when he looked for a solution when Safdie Architects asked him to photograph Marina Bay Sands from bird’s eye perspective.
This was long before drones became the standard for aerial photography and there was no permit to fly close to the building with a helicopter.
He sourced for a big helium balloon and made an attachment under it to hang a custom made rig. It had a wireless video connection and remote pan, tilt and trigger possibilities. He also constructed a rig which could carry an analog medium format camera, to be able to shoot on film.
De balloon was controlled by a kite string system .
More and more clients showed interest for this approach - it was a way more affordable solution than hiring a helicopter - and Frank did commissioned aerial photography for A*Star, Mapletree Investments, Surbana Architects, DP ARchitects, WingTai, NUS and many more.
Over the years his rigs became more sophisticated, having even zoom possibilities.
But with the development of drone technology his system soon became obsolete.

Rig for Product Video

For Refind, a glass recycling project founded by Glass Artist B.Jane Cowie, Frank recently created a low cost system to be able to apply a morphing effect. He aimed to clearly illustrate the link between raw product ( recycled bottles ) and the way Jane turned them into art works, go to our videography page for more. Music By Terry Riley
